US Reccie (TSE in 2017)

In August 2017 people across a large swathe of the United States will witness a total solar eclipse which may be viewed by more people than ever in history. Of course not all places in the US are equal, some will see a longer period of totality than others, some are more likely to be cloudy than others and naturally, some places are more attractive places to visit. 

Indonesia - Ternate & Tidore

Hot, sweaty, beeping motorcycles, shouting locals, fishing smells, dusty port, so hot! Walk to the harbour and pick up a ferry with a hold full of supplies – it’s the only way that food, fuel and goods travel between Ternate and Tidore. Every car, bike, oversized sound-system, beer (not many of those to be fair) and cold coke comes this way – as do we.

Indonesian Reccie

In March 2016 the path of a total eclipse will sweep across the Indonesian archipelago passing over the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and the Moluccas. With many possible island viewing locations and a huge range of possible itineraries I travelled with my colleague David Bray to Indonesia in November 2013 on a fact finding tour.  

Astronomy from Hawaii

The reason for taking our tour to Hawaii in June 2012 was to witness a rare Transit of Venus but the tour incorporated much more for those interested in astronomy. The night of the 3rd/4th June saw the group setting up their cameras and telescopes outside the hotel to see a partial eclipse of the moon. Whilst lunar eclipses aren’t particularly rare events it made up an interesting trio of alignments that must surely be the greatest number of astronomical events in one tour, coming after the annular eclipse of the Sun in the US and ahead of the transit of Venus.

Lunar Eclipse - December 2011

I could hardly have timed my holiday to Egypt’s Sinai coast any better. After days and nights of clear skies, watching the waxing moon and bright planets Jupiter and Venus dominate the night sky, the evening of 10th December arrived and we pulled up sun-loungers on the beach to watch the moon rising over the Arabian Peninsula. Unfortunately, we weren’t quite far enough east to catch totality but the moon rose with just a thin crescent illuminated and the main body of the moon still in the Earth’s shadow and pale red.

Clear skies in Australia

One year from today the next total solar eclipse will be visible from Queensland, Australia and our local ground agent woke early to watch the sunrise from our chosen location near Mount Molloy inland from the coast. He was keen to report clear skies and let us know that the weather has been generally favourable for eclipse viewing over the past few weeks.

US Annular Eclipse - the National Parks

As the time to next year’s eclipse ticks by I thought I’d share some more thoughts and images from my reccie trip last May. 

Leaving Bryce Canyon I travelled eastwards along Scenic Byway 12 to Moab passing through grand and ever changing landscape including Capitol Reef NP, Boulder Mountain and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.   

Svalbard Eclipse Reccie

Ever since I was a child, I would pore over an atlas and dream about polar exploration. Even then, Svalbard was synonymous in my mind with the arctic wilderness.

Last week I had the chance to realise my dream and travel further north than I have ever been before, as I flew to Longyearbyen, the main town of Svalbard.

Get ready for this week's lunar eclipse

This coming Wednesday evening, on 15 June, there will be a total eclipse of the Moon. Eclipses of the Moon occur when the Full Moon passes through the cone of shadow cast by the Earth into space. The eclipse first becomes total at 20:23 BST, reaches maximum at 21:13 BST, and ends at 22:03 BST.  The partial eclipse ends at 23:02 BST.  Unfortunately, observers throughout Europe will miss the early stages of the eclipse because they occur before moonrise.
